Career paths in hotels, restaurants, retail & trades
Northern Lights Ventures operates hotels and motels, restaurants and lodge dining, Home Hardware retail, general contracting, and commercial properties across five Northwestern Ontario communities. That mix creates real paths to learn new skills — sometimes without changing employers.
Hotel and motel careers
Many people start in housekeeping or as a front desk associate and build guest service skills on the job. Night attendant roles suit staff who prefer overnight schedules and independent work. With experience, employees often take on more responsibility for reservations, guest recovery, team training, or property coordination.
Kitchen and dining roles at hotel properties — cook, chef, kitchen helper, and server — are listed under Motel & Hotel on our jobs page because they support on-site dining and banquets. Food safety certification and Smart Serve (where alcohol is served) strengthen your profile for these paths.
Handyman / maintenance roles at individual properties suit people who like hands-on problem solving and can support room repairs, preventative maintenance, and grounds work.
Restaurant and lodge roles
Standalone restaurant openings — such as line cook or server / cashier — appear under the Restaurant category. Lodge and seasonal support roles can be a fit if you enjoy varied duties during busy travel seasons. Kitchen experience in one setting often transfers to another within the group.
Retail at Home Hardware
Retail sales associate roles in Sioux Lookout, Dryden, and Geraldton involve customer service, product knowledge, stocking, and transactions. Building supply retail rewards people who learn lumber, hardware, and project basics. Reliability and willingness to lift and move product matter as much as prior retail experience.
Trades and multi-location maintenance
General maintenance technician postings may cover multiple locations and suit candidates with plumbing, electrical, carpentry, or HVAC experience. A valid driver’s licence is often important when travel between properties is required.
Moving between communities
Because we hire in Sioux Lookout, Dryden, Geraldton, Ear Falls / Red Lake, and Longlac, experienced staff sometimes transfer when life circumstances or new opportunities align. Tell us in your application if you are open to more than one location.
How to position yourself for growth
- Volunteer for cross-training (front desk and night audit, kitchen prep, retail floor).
- Keep certifications current and document new skills on your resume.
- Communicate career interests to your manager — many promotions are filled internally first.
